H. Hokulani Porter has been a family nurse practitioner for the past 10 years. She is born and raised in Hawai’i and received her master’s degree in Nursing at the University of Hawai’i in Manoa and was part of program focusing on increasing Native Hawaiian health providers to serve in rural health settings, prioritizing the health needs of rural populations and public health. Prior to becoming a nurse practitioner, she worked as a perioperative nurse and felt compelled to seek higher education after noting the high numbers of individuals with peripheral vascular disease that often ended in amputations. She also works as a provider in primary care, assisting people in managing chronic disease so as to reduce their risk of circulatory demise. She is currently seeking a certification through the American Board of Wound Management as a wound care specialist and looks forward to assisting patients to care for and to heal their complex wounds.
